The narrative begins behind a tightly shut double-glazed window on the ground floor of a low-rise apartment block. The protagonist has retreated into solitary quiet, irritated by the persistent clatter of the courtyard below: children tracing chalk games across asphalt, an elder keeping time on an upturned plastic laundry tub, and the hum of early-evening chatter. Initial resentment softens into an involuntary somatic infection; by the middle of the week, her fingers mirror the polyrhythm against office desks and subway grab-handles, pulling the outside rhythm into her closed interior world.

Unable to resist the gravity of the sound, she steps down the concrete stairwell with a simple plate of shared food. What follows is an unforced explosion of collective euphoria, the courtyard transformed not by high-concept spectacle, but by people finding one another’s cadence. The Afro-house four-
